The Working Artist · One-on-one advising
Make the artwork you want to make, and reach collectors who need it.
Most artists know something isn’t working. Fewer know which thing. Sometimes it’s what’s happening in the studio, sometimes it’s everything outside it. Telling them apart is where I come in.

How it works
- Each session
- 50 minutes, on Zoom
- After every session
- Written recap and plan
- Between sessions
- Commitment
- Three months suggested, then monthly
Three months is about how long it takes to get your work and your presentation where they need to be, and to work out where they go next.
What we work on
Every artist is different and there’s no curriculum. Usually some mix of:
- Honest critique of your portfolio and current body of work
- Artist statements and bios
- Website and presentation
- Pricing
- Gallery and collector outreach
- Exhibition planning
- Career strategy, and the next right decision
- Accountability, and someone to answer to
What you’re hiring
Knowing when something is ready, and when it isn’t.
New Western Talent
Four years running an open call for three-piece bodies of work. More than a hundred applications, and I saw which ones the jurors selected and which ones they passed over.
Twenty years
About twenty years in creative direction and six running a gallery.
Where artists went next
Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg. Small Works, Great Wonders at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The Coors Western Art Exhibit, the C.M. Russell Museum, Medicine Man, Visions West Contemporary.
These accomplishments are theirs. I helped them get clear about what they were building and how to put it in front of the right people.
This judgment is what you’re hiring. The sessions and the notes are just how it reaches you.
Fit
This works when
- You’re serious, and you’re already making things
- You want honest feedback more than encouragement
- You’ll follow through between sessions
- You’re building a long career rather than chasing a quick win
This doesn’t work if what you want is to be told your work is good. Sometimes I will. This isn’t what you’re paying for.
Artists
“From the beginning, he believed in my work and has been an incredible supporter as my career has grown. … Throughout the process, he consistently offered thoughtful feedback and encouragement that helped me create a stronger and more cohesive exhibition.”
Western Gallery
I own and run Western Gallery ↗ (opens in a new window). Advising and the gallery are separate, and I keep them that way. Working with me doesn’t change how I or any juror evaluates your work for a Western Gallery call or exhibition.
But please take a gander and join our mailing list to be notified of upcoming calls and exhibitions, etc! www.western.gallery ↗ (opens in a new window)
